Only 12 years ago it was a village of
fishermen, without electricity, isolated from the rest of the country and
only accessible by a road the rain often made unusable. Just to get to
Sanchez took some hours on horseback or with a jeep.
Today it is a
small village in the midst of coconut trees, bordered by the most beautiful
and natural beaches in the Dominican Republic. Mass tourism and big
all-inclusive hotels never really got underway here, because of the lacking
infrastructure. The type of accommodation you will find in this charming
village consists for the most part of small hotels, bed and breakfast and
houses or villas. It is well possible, having an aperitif one night, to meet
someone who tells you the recent history of Las Terrenas. The first ones to
discover this small paradise where some Frenchmen from the mountains started
to build houses that transformed later on into small hotels, 2 or 3 bars and
beach restaurants, to receive their visiting friends. Nine years ago
electricity appeared and brought important changes to the village. Nowadays
fishing is not the major activity anymore, but the friendly atmosphere
between the locals and the foreign residents still exists.
